WHAT IS
CITIZEN SCIENCE?

Citizen science is a collaborative approach to scientific research where volunteers participate in scientific projects. These projects can vary widely, covering diverse fields such as environmental monitoring and conservation, public health discovery, space exploration, and more. Participants can contribute by collecting data, conducting experiments, or analyzing information. Their involvement significantly expands the scope and scale of scientific research, allowing scientists to gather large amounts of data that would be otherwise challenging or costly to obtain.

Citizen science projects can lead to valuable discoveries, promote scientific literacy, and empower individuals to actively engage in scientific inquiry and decision-making processes.

"In 2023, 4,753 of our volunteers supported national marine sanctuary citizen science efforts helping to answer real-world scientific questions with a total of 36,020 hours, which is equivalent to $1.15M or the time of 20 full-time federal employees."

CITIZEN SCIENCE APPLICATIONS

Citizen science manifests its versatility across diverse domains, harnessing the collaborative efforts of volunteers to yield valuable data and insights. Noteworthy applications include:

ENVIRONMENTAL
MONITORING & CONSERVATION

Citizen scientists play a pivotal role in tracking environmental changes, collecting data on air and water quality, observing biodiversity, and reporting climate-related observations. Projects range from monitoring urban heat islands to tracking migratory species, offering a holistic view of environmental dynamics.

PUBLIC
HEALTH

In health research, citizen scientists are instrumental in bridging data gaps and aiding in the discovery of new diseases. They provide valuable data on disease patterns and outbreaks, which is instrumental in initiatives like Flu Near You. This reliance on citizen contributions helps public health officials monitor the spread of influenza and assess the effectiveness of vaccination efforts.

Contributing to wildlife conservation, citizen scientists monitor and document animal behavior, populations, and habitats. Activities encompass tracking bird migrations, cataloging species, and identifying invasive species posing threats to local ecosystems.

SPACE EXPLORATION

Volunteers play a crucial role in space exploration by analyzing astronomical data, assisting astronomers in classifying celestial objects and transcribing historical records. Their contributions significantly contribute to our understanding of the cosmos, as they help unravel mysteries of the universe and uncover new phenomena.
